Clerkship

Burn Surgery

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center Department of Plastic Surgery offers a four-week clerkship (SUR1-4021) for fourth-year medical students interested in learning more about the field of burn surgery. 

The Burn Elective is a surgical preceptorship in the Burn Center. The student will function as a “junior extern” to care for burn and wound patients in the ICU and stepdown unit. They will work side-by-side with the burn fellow and faculty. The student will participate not only in the preoperative care but also the intra- and post-operative care of these patients. The student will gain insight into the pathophysiology of burns, the fluid and electrolyte requirements, and the operative and post-operative care of these patients.

The rotation consists of a 4 week course located at the Firefighters’ Regional Burn Center at Regional Medical Center, Regional One Health.  Students will participate as members of the clinical team and work in the clinical care of burn surgery patients.  Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS)

Plastic Surgery

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center Department of Plastic Surgery offers a four-week clerkship (SUR1-4020) for fourth-year medical students interested in learning more about the field of plastic surgery.  The rotation offers broad exposure to many different clinical areas of plastic surgery from minor trauma injury to complex reconstructive procedures.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of settings from hospital based clinics, in-patient treatment, out-patient treatment, emergency room and operating room settings. 

The rotation consist of four one-week rotations that take place at the participating hospitals in the UTHSC plastic surgery residency program: 

Students will meet and work with faculty from all these hospitals,  participate as members of the clinical team, and work in the clinical care of plastic surgery patients. Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS)
