Department of Anesthesiology History
Founded in 1911, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis is a comprehensive health science center focusing on education, research, patient care, and public service. The University of Tennessee started educating anesthesiologists when Robert Hingson, MD, instituted a formal program in 1942.
The city of Memphis offers a clinical variety for the proposed residency second to none. Regional One Health (ROH) has one of the largest trauma centers in the United States. The Rout Obstetrical unit cares for the highest risk obstetrical cases. Methodist University Hospital is renown for its cardiac, transplantation and neurosurgical expertise among other areas. Le Bonheur and St. Jude’s Childrens’ Hospital have exceptional pediatric cases and the Memphis VA Medical Center is a lynchpin of medical care for the Veterans community in this region.
The more than 100-year-old Semmes Murphy Neurologic and Spine Institute and the Campbell Clinic of the eponymous textbook fame are located here and care for patients in our hospitals.
