Faculty Advisors

Dr. Dalgo is a non-tenure track Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Palliative Care. His primary role is as Director for the Center for Bioethics and Health Equity (CBHE). He is a nationally certified healthcare ethics consultant (HCE-C) and performs numerous clinical ethics consultations throughout the year. Since becoming the director of the CBHE in July 2019, he continues to perform strategic planning, administrative, educational, and consultative functions in this role.

His secondary roles are as clinician-educator and fellowship program director in palliative care, medical director of the Wellness and Stress Clinic, academic general pediatrics hospitalist, med-peds consultant, and associate director for the Center for Multicultural and Global Health. In his palliative care role, he performs inpatient and outpatient consults, home visits, and is on call 24 hours a day for 12 weeks per year. He is the program director for the hospice and palliative medicine fellowship which increased it complement from 5 to 6 fellows per year in 2021. He also teaches medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty as part of his daily rounds and has organized a systematized curriculum for the palliative care fellowship.

In his role as medical director of the Stress and Wellness Clinic Dr. Dalgo is one of two physicians leading efforts to provide free primary care for the Oakhaven community of Memphis. The medical clinic collaborates with multiple community partners including UTHSC, University of Memphis, Rhodes College, and Memphis Area Legal Services and serves as a safety-net clinic open every Monday evening. Dr. Dalgo works on a multidisciplinary team with social workers, pharmacists, medical students, residents, physician assistants, pastors, and nurse practitioners to provide holistic care to patients.

In his role in general pediatrics, Dr. Dalgo is an academic hospitalist attending overseeing multidisciplinary family-centered rounds with the UTHSC medical students, interns, and residents for 4-6 weeks per year. In this capacity he teaches, gives feedback, and provides appropriate levels of independence for his learners. He also advises medical students, med-peds residents, pediatric residents, and palliative care throughout their training. He is a med-peds core faculty member and is one of 4 faculty serving on the program's clinical competency committee. Also, he is an MPOWER faculty advisor for the College of Medicine and offers support and mentorship for medical students. Additionally, he serves as a med-peds attending consulting on patients admitted to the children's hospital who are adult age.

Finally, as the associate director for the Center for Multicultural and Global Health he has taken the lead on program development for global health education, experiences locally and abroad, and educational tracks for learners. Dr. Dalgo has co-led the initiative that has resulted in the creation the UTHSC Center for Multicultural and Global Health in January 2020. In this role he gives lectures, leads small group seminars, and facilitates the creation and implementation of case-based simulations at the CHIPS Center. Dr. Dalgo's leadership in global health track has been well-received by residents and currently has 20 residents enrolled from internal medicine, med-peds, and pediatric residencies in the 2 to 3-year longitudinal curriculum.
