New Associate Dean & Designated Institutional Official (DIO), Paul M. Schwartzberg, DO, MBA, FAAP (May 2023)

Paul M. Schwartzberg, DO, MBA, FAAP, has been named the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Designated Institutional Official (DIO) of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine - Chattanooga effective May 1, 2023. Dr. Schwartzberg succeeds Robert C. Fore, EdD, FACEHP, CHCP, who was the prior DIO for 15 years and retired at the end of December 2022. Dr. Fore was named "Professor Emeritus" in January 2023 for his service and excellence in Continuing and Graduate Medical Education.

In his new role, Dr. Schwartzberg will work in collaboration with the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) to oversee all 23 Graduate Medical Education programs, including 16 ACGME-accredited programs sponsored by the UTHSC College of Medicine – Chattanooga.

Dr. Schwartzberg completed his undergraduate degree at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed a Pediatric residency at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Ambulatory Pediatrics at Brown University/Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. He is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Dr. Schwartzberg began his career in New York City as a Clinical Instructor of Pediatrics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. In 2004, he joined the pediatric faculty at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) and served as Program Director of the Pediatric Residency Program from 2008 to 2019. During that time, the program received several commendations from the Review Committee for Pediatrics. Dr. Schwartzberg was also promoted to Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at both Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and received his MBA from Monmouth University in 2018. He was appointed Associate DIO at JSUMC in 2017 and worked on many successful initiatives including a cultural competency training program for residents, which was awarded a 2018 Gold Humanism Scholarship from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. Additionally, he served as Team Leader of an 18-month learning collaborative addressing resident burnout and well-being.

Since 2019, Dr. Schwartzberg has served as an Accreditation Field Representative for the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) and has conducted over 200 accreditation site visits to residency, fellowship programs and Sponsoring Institutions across the country. He was also selected as a speaker for the 2022 ACGME Annual Educational Conference. Dr. Schwartzberg has been active with several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers.
