Certificate in Telemedicine
The growing and vibrant telemedicine industry is a broad and emerging field that links patients, health care providers, and educators across the country via video and medical-information technology. Currently the trend is moving towards expanding the use of telemedicine.
The certificate in Telemedicine prepares healthcare professionals to advocate and coordinate telemedicine related activities within an organization. Telemedicine-trained persons can be found in telemedicine networks, health agencies, manufacturing companies, equipment resellers, government agencies, educational programs and many other organizations and companies.
Learning Outcomes
The certificate is designed to help students learn, develop, and implement the technical, clinical challenges and decisions that are involved in the set up as well as the day-to-day practice of telemedicine.
Upon completion of the certificate program, the graduates will:
- Explain fundamental terms and concepts in telemedicine
- Select telemedicine technology and its specialized features
- Understand legal and ethical practices in telemedicine
- Educate client/patient about how to be safe when working with telemedicine
- Evaluate updates on state and federal policies
- Develop emergency plans
- Understand communication best practices in clinical telemedicine
- Learn setting up efficient telemedicine consultation room with respect to lighting, ergonomics and privacy
TLMD 500 – Telemedicine Concepts and Issues (Online, 3 credit hours)
Telemedicine concepts from the perspectives of providers, payers, consumers. An exploration of current critical issues related to telemedicine including policy, legal and ethical issues, assessment of population health, telemedicine access and quality of care issues. Overview of multiple systems, vendors, processes and organizations; structure of telemedicine delivery systems, methodology for evaluation of telemedicine. Major topics include networks, communications protocols, security, PACS, Remote Patient Monitoring, Mobile Technologies and Cloud Computing.
Course prerequisites include verification of employment as a clinician, such as physicians, nurses, dentists, optometrists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, audiologists, speech pathologists and other health professionals or ancillary health care providers, and a Baccalaureate degree from an approved accredited institution. Clinicians whose native language is not English will also need to submit the results of a TOEFL exam. Minimum score considerations are 550 on the paper-based exam, 213 on the computer-based exam, or a score of 80 on the internet-based exam.
TLMD 504 – Telemedicine Administration and Applications (Online, 3 credit hours)
Overview of current, and emerging telemedicine administration involved in making strategic use of telemedicine in health care organizations and linkages to business, planning, and governance. Introductions to telemedicine coding, billing, licensure and insurance requirements. Telemedicine industry and drivers of telemedicine growth, technology used & live interactive visit, nonclinical applications, recognizing barriers to telemedicine, overcoming challenges and attributes of successful telemedicine programs, building awareness and support for the telemedicine program.

TLMD 509 Telemedicine Implementation Strategies (Online, 3 credit hours)
Strategic telemedicine implementation, with emphasis on the organizational structures, decision making processes, and evaluative practices that facilitate the successful attainment of strategic objectives. The course uses a combination of teaching and learning techniques including lectures, case studies, and direct interaction with outside executives.
Course prerequisites include completion of TLMD 500 - Telemedicine Concepts and Issues and TLMD 504 – Telemedicine Administration and Applications with a grade of “B” or better.
Textbooks are not required. Course materials will be provided in Learning Management System (Blackboard).
