Congratulations to Dr. Kumar
Dr. Sajeesh Kumar, Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Health Sciences who was awarded the “2021 Caryl E. Carpenter Excellence in Community Support Award” from Tennessee Primary Care Association (TPCA). The TPCA is a membership organization of more than 30 non-profit primary care clinic organizations operating nearly 200 clinic sites to individuals and families throughout the state Congratulations Dr. Kumar.
Fifth Annual Rachel Kay Stevens Therapy Center Art Show and Auction a Record Breaker
The Rachel Kay Stevens Therapy Center held its fifth-annual Art Show and Auction over the weekend, raising a record-breaking $4,800.
The event, which auctioned artwork created by children in the community who receive OT services, as well as pieces by professional artists, raises funds for the Rachel Kay Stevens Therapy Center (RKSTC), the only student-run, pro bono occupational therapy clinic in the Mid-South.

The awardees were Dr. Orli Weisser-Pike (2 certificates-and Pedagogy of the Social Determinants of Health and Clinical Educator), Dr. Anne Zachry (Pedagogy of the Social Determinants of Health), Dr. Faith Kiphut (Clinical Educator), Dr. Kelsey Klein (Instructors New to Teaching), Dr. Lauren Woods (Instructors New to Teaching), Ms. ChelseaPeeler (Universal Design for Learning) and Dr. Rebecca Reynolds (Universal Design for Learning).
Dr. Chumbler named DHS Chair and Associate Dean of Academic Development and Accrediation
Neale R. Chumbler, PhD, has been named to head two divisions within the College of Health Professions at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
Dr. Chumbler joins UTHSC with more than three decades of experience in academia. He most recently served as dean of the College of Health and Public Service at the University of North Texas and professor in Rehabilitation & Health Services, where he led seven academic departments and approximately 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Chumbler has developed 13 different undergraduate and graduate courses and has mentored multiple undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral research fellows over his career.
Dr. Dale named Department of PT Chair
R. Barry Dale, DPT, PhD, MBA, has been named chair of the Department of Physical Therapy for the College of Health Professions at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He will begin his role July 30.
Dr. Dale earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Alabama and a master’s in Education in Exercise Science from the University of Alabama, Birmingham. He earned his PhD in Kinesiology with a specialization in Exercise Physiology from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa; a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from University of Tennessee, Chattanooga; and his MBA from the University of South Alabama.
Congratulations to Dr. Lauren Woods
Lauren Woods, PhD, OTR/L, Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy became the first person in the College of Health Professions to complete the requirements for the Craft of Teaching Medallion offered through the UTHSC Teaching and Learning Center. Dr. Woods' effort and accomplishments exemplify the commitment that she has made to teaching excellence at UTHSC and specifically in the College of Health Professions. She will receive a medallion and a plaque to commemorate her achievement.
Successful first ever UTHSC Giving Day
In April of 2021, UTHSC hosted their first ever UTHSC Giving Day. More than 100 faculty, staff, alumni and friends raised $28,900 for the college. This represented a 416% involvement above our goal for donors. Special thanks to William Frey and Dr. Barbara DuBray-Benstein who provided matching funds for the CoHP. Their generous gifts have doubled the impact of giving to our college. Campus wide, $225,000 was raised for the university. When the challenge and matching dollars were added for each of the colleges, a total of $579,132 was raised for UTHSC. This is an outstanding effort and one that CoHP students will greatly benefit from.
Congratulations to Dr. Jacen S. Moore
Jacen S. Moore, PhD, MA, MT (ASCP), Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Health Sciences who was nominated and selected by the College of Health Professions students to receive the “The University of Tennessee Health Science Center 2021 Outstanding Teacher Award. The award and $1000 stipend are sponsored by the University of Tennessee Alumni Association. The missions for educating and teaching our students are the engines that are so important for our college, and therefore, it is indeed wonderful to see university-wide recognition for the excellence in teaching that Dr. Moore has highlighted in our college! Dr. Moore will be recognizing at the UT Alumni Association Board of Governors banquet in Knoxville June 4, 2021.
