Throughout the year, residents participate in events that strengthen teamwork, celebrate milestones, and create space for connection outside of clinical responsibilities. Orientation & Welcoming Events

New residents begin their training with a series of activities designed to build camaraderie and introduce them to the culture of the program.

Orientation Week

Incoming residents participate in a structured orientation that blends clinical preparation with opportunities to get to know their classmates and faculty. Team‑building exercises, small‑group discussions, and community introductions help residents feel supported from day one.

Ocoee Team‑Building Retreat

Each year, residents travel to the Ocoee area for an outdoor team‑building experience. Activities focus on communication, trust, and problem‑solving — all essential skills for residency. The retreat is consistently one of the most memorable team bonding experience for UT Jackson residents.

Nashville Sagacity Team Building

Residents participate in a structured team‑building program in Nashville that emphasizes leadership development, collaboration, and reflective practice. These sessions help residents strengthen their relationships with their fellow team members while enjoying time away from clinical duties.

Recruitment

Another annual tradition takes residents and faculty members to the National Kansas City Conference for a mix of residency recruitment and professional development.

Black Tie Boxing

Residents attend this popular local event to participate in community service and to help take care of the participants throughout the evening as needed.  It is a great way to get involved with the community.

Celebrating Achievements & Milestones

The program takes pride in recognizing resident accomplishments and marking important transitions.

Graduation Ceremonies

Each graduating class is honored with a ceremony celebrating their hard work, growth, and contributions to the program. Faculty, families, and fellow residents gather to reflect on achievements and welcome graduates into the next stage of their careers.

Second Look Events

Prospective residents are invited back for a closer look at the program’s culture, educational environment, and community. These events allow applicants to meet current residents, ask questions, and experience the supportive atmosphere firsthand.

Roy Douglass Memorial Golf Tournament

Residents and faculty join in this annual tournament, which supports “Residents Without Borders”, which is a international missions fund that residents have the opportunity to participate in each year.

Research

Residents team up with medical students each summer to present scholarly research, learn from peers, and engage with faculty mentors.  These events highlight the program’s commitment to academic growth and evidence-based practice.
