Meet the Department Chair
Dr. Haewon Shin is the Semmes Murphey Professor of Excellence in Neurology and Chair of Neurology in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She earned her medical degree from Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine in North Carolina in 2006, followed by Neurology Residency at Wake Forest University North Carolina Baptist Hospital in 2010 and Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in 2011.
Dr. Shin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in building comprehensive epilepsy and outpatient neurology program to UTHSC Department of Neurology. She came from the University of New Mexico where she served as an Executive Vice Chair, Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs, and Epilepsy Section Chief for the Department of Neurology at University of New Mexico’s Health Science Center School of Medicine. She oversaw clinical operations and played a crucial role in advancing patient care. Prior to that, she worked as a Medical Director of Epilepsy at University of North Carolina.
Over the past decade, she has provided comprehensive and advanced epilepsy care using the newest epilepsy surgery and neuromodulation therapies to patients with refractory epilepsy in North Carolina and New Mexico. In addition, she developed the ACGME accredited epilepsy fellowship and trained numerous fellows in both institutions. Also, she played a major role in multiple research projects from translational neuromodulation to therapeutic multicenter clinical trials in epilepsy, funded by across NIH and industry. She published over 60 peer reviewed articles. In addition to strengthening the department in all the aforementioned ways, she takes great pride in her work toward improving the wellness, mentorship, and satisfaction of her faculty and learners
