International Education
The Bristol, United Kingdom International rotation has been a highlight of our resident’s experience during their time at UTHSC. The UTHSC Department of Neurosurgery has a longstanding relationship with the North Bristol Trust (NBT) neurosurgical unit dating back several decades.
This 6-month immersive rotation gives the resident additional focused subspecialty
training in their area of interest. In addition to this, it gives them the opportunity
to grow and learn working within the NHS health system. The subspecialty areas covered
in this elective include functional, trauma, pediatrics, spine, skull base, and cerebrovascular
neurosurgery. This optional rotation typically is offered during the PGY-5 or PGY-6
training years. Every resident from our program that has participated in this opportunity states at
graduation that it was one of the most valuable experiences during their time in training.
"Spending 6 months as a registrar at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, UK was the experience
of a lifetime. During my time there, I pursued a concentration in skull base and cerebrovascular
neurosurgery under the guidance of consultant neurosurgeon, Mr. Kumar Abhinav. Not
only was I able to develop a subspecialty focus and learn directly from renowned mentors,
but also, I got a chance to meet colleagues from across the world and make lasting
friendships in a novel healthcare system. Truly, this international experience has
served as a key highlight of my training thus far and has allowed me to take away
a new perspective and the fondest of memories." - Mustafa Motiwala, MD
