PGY-1 Regional One Health

Neurocritical Care
The PGY-1 year develops the foundational skills of bedside procedures, critical care management of patients, and surgical operative experience while on the neurosurgical services.  
PGY-2 Methodist University Hospital, Baptist Memorial Hospital (“East Rotation”) The PGY-2 year focuses on a rapid development of surgical skill in all aspects of both cranial and spinal surgery.  The PGY-2 resident is first assist at the two flagship hospitals BMH and MUH.  They are expected to gain a robust operative experience while expanding their knowledge base of managing a busy neurosurgical service.
PGY-3 Cerebrovascular, Regional One Health, Methodist University Hospital The PGY-3-year focus largely remains on operative volume and experience.  A rotation in vascular surgery during this year exposes the resident to both microsurgical and endovascular management of patients with cerebrovascular pathology. A rotation at ROH gives the resident high-volume experience in trauma neurosurgery managing both cranial and spinal trauma.
PGY-4 VAMC, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital The PGY-4 year includes a rotation at the VA in which the resident begins to develop and run their own clinic and operative schedule. The focus of this rotation is continuity of care and building a practice.  The resident also spends the other half of the year on Pediatrics at Le Bonheur in which they obtain experience in the full breadth of pediatric neurosurgery at a high-volume center (Le Bonheur /St. Jude).
PGY-5 Baptist Memorial Hospital (“East Rotation”), Elective The PGY-5 year involves a rotation at BMH which functions as a chief resident for this rotation.  The PGY-5 obtains a high volume of cases which include general neurosurgery, skull base, minimally invasive spine, and deformity spine surgery.  The remainder of the year is used as a focus elective time in the resident’s area of interest.
PGY-6 Regional One Chief, International Rotation The PGY-6 year includes chief of the trauma center (Regional one) which includes a large case volume of operative spine and cranial trauma.  The remainder of this year is spent on an international rotation in Bristol, UK focusing on the resident’s area of interest.
PGY-7 Methodist University Hospital Chief, Enfolded Fellowship Experience The PGY-7 year is the capstone of the program and involves chief of MUH in which the resident gains experience in complex cranial surgery, open neurovascular surgery, endovascular surgery, complex spine and deformity spine surgery.  The remainder of the year functions as an enfolded fellowship or transition to practice rotation in the resident’s area of interest to prepare them for a direct transition into practice.
