Current Research
General Obstetrics
Our breadth of research in general obstetrics spans clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness of various induction protocols, to observational studies on trial of labor after cesarean, to database studies examining predictors intrauterine fetal demise and placental abruption. We also have qualitative studies examining patient experiences with stillbirth and their perception of quality of care received at our facility. Additionally, we are reviewing an innovative program surrounding group prenatal care classes and associated pregnancy outcomes. Our Department is dedicated to evaluating the impact of race and socioeconomic status on health outcomes, including studies examining outcomes related to historic redlining and socioeconomic and racial drivers of health disparities.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine
Our investigators have considerable expertise in preeclampsia, including studies examining predictors of preeclampsia in our population, alternative preventive aspirin studies, and ways to minimize morbidity from treatment for severe preeclampsia. We are examining maternal morbidity in various clinical scenarios including PPROM, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, iron-deficiency anemia, and obesity. We have an enduring relationship with the UTHSC Division of Neonatology that has allowed us to study periviable prematurity, neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, fetal growth restriction, and congenital syphilis.
General Gynecology and MIGS
We have several clinical trials currently investigating approaches minimize pain and encourage rapid return to full recovery in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. These include studies in partnership with industry to evaluate innovative technology. We also have examined the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on risk of cervical dysplasia and the impact of opioid prescription practices on patients.
Gynecologic Oncology
We are partnering with investigators from other institutions to examine clinical protocols for the treatment of gynecologic cancers and have ongoing industry-sponsored studies examining cancer biomarkers. In addition, we are studying uterine and cervical cancer disparities in the mid-South region and ways of addressing these disparate outcomes.
Education
As we continue to advance the level of education in our department for our own trainees, we have also sought to develop curricula that may be applicable to other Obstetrics and Gynecology departments across the country, including programs for transitioning third year clerkship students to becoming successful junior interns, and subsequently preparing them for internship. We are also studying ways to optimize resident wellness while also providing well-rounded, comprehensive training.
