Application Process

How to Apply

Application Process and Interviews

  • Opportunities for competitive interviews may be extended to applicants based on an applicant’s competencies, academic achievements, knowledge, skills and abilities, and characteristics required to succeed in residency or fellowship training.
    • Initial Application Screening: This process includes the utilization of automated filters based on minimum program eligibility criteria (e.g.. USMLE/COMEX scores, ECFMG certification) and prescreening conducted by designated staff to ensure all required documents are submitted and basic criteria are met.
    • Detailed Application Review: The program director reviews applications using a standardized rubric focusing on competencies, academic achievements, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Applicants are assessed comprehensively, considering experience, personal statement, letters of recommendation, and any unique characteristics that align with the program’s values and mission.
    • Selection for Interviews: The program director extends interview invitations to applicants who meet the requirements of the application review.
    • Communication and Scheduling: Invitations will be extended via Thalamus, where applicants will have the opportunity to select and schedule their preferred interview day. Currently, our program conducts interviews virtually, utilizing the Zoom platform.
    • Conducting Interviews: On the day of interview, applicants will be interviewed by 3 faculty members, the program director, and Chief Residents.
    • Post-Interview Review: Our Program Manager collects feedback from all interviewers and compiles it into a comprehensive assessment for each applicant. The final ranking of the applicant by the residency selection committee will be based on interview performance and overall application assessment.
    • Decision Making: A residency selection committee meeting is conducted where the committee members review final rankings, and the program director submits the final rank list in NRMP.
    • Immediately following our rank meeting, our program hosts a second-look where we invite applicants to Memphis and the UTHSC campus to meet our residents, faculty, and program leadership and to tour the rotation sites.
    • Notification and Follow-Up: Post-Match Day applicants will receive an official notification from the program detailing departmental expectations and the GME Office detailing onboarding and hospital orientation instructions.

International Medical Graduate Requirements

Due to the large number of highly qualified applicants that we receive, only a small number of international medical graduates are granted interviews.

To be considered by our selection committee as an IMG applicant, one must have a passing score of 230 on the first attempts of USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK.

In addition, we require the date of graduation from medical school to be within the last three (3) years, or that an applicant must have worked as a physician in a clinical setting for at least two years out of the last five years. We do not require USMLE Step 3 when reviewing your application.

To be considered for ranking, applicants must submit a valid ECFMG certificate by February 15. We do not routinely sponsor J-1 Visas and cannot sponsor H visas.

The Psychiatry Program does not facilitate observerships or externship.
