Psychiatry Residency
The psychiatry residency clinical rotations reflect the emphasis and goals of each year of training. Didactic material presented in courses and seminars is carefully coordinated with these rotations. Most instruction occurs in small group settings, with faculty representing varied disciplines that include psychiatry, psychology, and social work.
The Residency Training Committee, composed of both faculty and resident members, is responsible for developing, evaluating, and revising the program. Residents regularly evaluate their training experiences and have important input regarding the selection of their clinical rotations and supervisors. Thus, the program is carefully tailored to the individual needs of residents within the framework of a curriculum designed to maximize opportunities for professional and academic growth.
Welcome from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Psychiatry Residency Program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Our department is committed to the UT Health Science Center’s missions of research, teaching, treatment and community engagement.
We strive to provide our residents with a rewarding educational experience by providing a rich and diverse hands-on clinical experience, supplemented with excellent didactics and educational bootcamps, and offering structured mentorship and opportunities for research, quality improvement and advocacy.
Our program and faculty work with residents to tailor their training to meet the trainees’ career goals. Our residents work very closely with medical students and take part in a yearlong “Residents as Teachers” course during their residency giving them a jumpstart on an academic career. Our institution and its partners offer fellowships in child psychiatry and addiction medicine, thus offering our residents further subspecialty training.
Our program is a melting pot with residents and faculty from different parts of the country and the world, who each bring a unique flavor and perspective. We pride ourselves in being an open-minded, nurturing and collegial department. Please look through our website for information on the department as well as our program. We look forward to seeing you on the interview trail.
