Complaint Process for Distance Education Students
Every student deserves a positive educational experience. Sometimes a student’s experience may not be what they anticipate, and the student may have a concern or a complaint.
A student has the right to lodge a complaint or grievance. The institution should ensure that all concerns and complaints of students are addressed fairly and are resolved promptly. Student complaints relating to consumer protection laws offered under the terms and conditions of the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA), must first be filed with the institution to seek resolution.
SARA consumer protection provisions require the Institution’s Home State, through its SARA Portal Entity, to investigate and resolve allegations of dishonest or fraudulent activity by the state’s SARA-participating institutions, including the provision of false or misleading information.
-
The student should begin the complaint process with the institution and if resolution is not found, the student would contact the Institution’s Home State SARA Portal Entity. The SARA State Portal Entities are listed at https://www.nc-sara.org/state-portal-entity-contacts
-
Additional information can be found in Section 4 of the SARA Manual.
Educational Requirements for Licensure or Certification by Program by State
US Department of Education regulations require UTHSC to provide information regarding whether completion of a program would be sufficient to meet licensure requirements in a state for a given occupation. NC-SARA requires UTHSC to supply contact information for licensure in locations where it cannot determine if programs would be sufficient for licensure. Licensure applicants are advised to seek additional information from the state and territories in which they seek employment as specific requirements may change.
Completion of the program meets educational requirements for licensure in all states (and the District of Columbia) except for New York State. UTHSC has been unable to determine if completion of the program meets educational requirements for licensure in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
Additional information on Board of Nursing Professional Licensure Requirements can be found on the NCSBN website.

Underage Drinking and Associated Responsibilities
- Student Drug & Alcohol Policy
- The Tennessee General Assembly passed legislation regarding underage drinking and associated responsibilities. The law prohibits any resident, owner, or occupant of property (the social host) from allowing an underage adult to consume alcohol on such property. The legislation defines "underage adults" as those individuals who are at least eighteen (18) years of age but less than twenty-one (21) years of age.
- A resident may face criminal prosecution and University sanction if an underage adult consumes alcohol on his or her property which includes, but is not limited to, a residence hall room or apartment, fraternity or sorority affiliated housing, an off-campus house or apartment, or any other property owned or occupied by the individual.
