Student Conduct Process
What to expect if you are alleged to have violated a Standard of Conduct:
Our office receives reports from University administration, Campus Police, MPD, other law enforcement agencies, as well as through other members of the University community (i.e. faculty, staff, and other students). After receiving a report, the office reviews the information, and may conduct additional fact finding, to determine whether one of the Standards of Conduct has been violated.
The Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards (SCCS), in consultation with the student, works to schedule an initial meeting. The student is e-mailed the date, time, and location of the meeting as well as their Fundamental Rights and the alleged Standard of Conduct violation.
If a student fails to attend the initial meeting, a disciplinary hold may be placed on their account.
Student is informed of their Fundamental Rights and provided the opportunity to share their version of the events. Based on this information, Student Conduct may continue to investigate or decide that there will be no charges based on the information given.
Either during the meeting or at the conclusion of an investigation, the student is presented with a Resolution Option Form documenting the violation and recommended sanction. A student may choose to accept responsibility and sanction during the initial meeting (administrative hearing).
Option 1
If the student chooses to accept responsibility and sanction, the student signs the Resolution Option Form and Notice of Sanctions.
The student is provided information regarding compliance and any other requirements. The student is e-mailed an outcome letter documenting the violation and sanction. An administrative hearing may occur at the student’s initial meeting or at a later date.
Examples of Sanctions:
- Alcohol and/or Drug Education Programs
- Mandatory Education
- Loss of Privilege
- Written warning
- Verbal reprimand
- Probation
- Suspension
- Permanent dismissal
Failure to complete sanction may result in a violation of Standard of Conduct 25, and a disciplinary hold may be placed on the student’s account.
Option 2
Student does not accept responsibility and/or sanction and requests a hearing.
University Hearing Panel
Hears student/student organization violations of the Standards of Conduct
If recommended sanction is suspension or greater, then the student has the following hearing option:
Administrative Procedures Act (APA) hearing
Students may retain counsel to represent them before an administrative law judge. The university is represented by General Counsel.
Student must waive their right to an APA hearing to request one of the other hearing options.
Former Students
Student Conduct will be responsible for maintaining all official University records related to student conduct.
Former students seeking a summary of their disciplinary record should:
- Send an email to KacieJo Brown
- Include your full name that you attended the University of Tennessee Health Science Center
- Include your date of birth
- Affirmatively request a summary of the disciplinary record; “I would like a summary of my disciplinary record.”
