Active Learning Course Redesign

The Active Learning Course Redesign Teaching Excellence Institute (TEI) is an 8-month program for instructors interested in integrating Active Learning into a course redesign.The program is open to all faculty but must be nominated by the participant’s academic dean or department chair.

Active learning instruction includes evidence-based strategies to promote student learning and engagement. In this TEI, participants will craft learning outcomes that reflect big picture goals. Based on the learning outcomes, participants will then design assessments and teaching methods aligned with effective active learning strategies. The TEI consists of the following components: 

The program will include several components:

1. A series of monthly virtual, synchronous workshops. In workshops, participants will re-design an existing course.  
2. Access to print and online resources that relate to the above topics.  
3. An online forum where members of the cohort can continue discussions and exchange ideas.  
4. Support for the cohort should any of the members wish to continue meeting after the initial program 

This course is appropriate for faculty new to course design and active learning as well as experienced educators interested in joining a learning community of likeminded faculty. Those who complete this certificate will also receive the “Course Design” medallion. 
 
Faculty interested in joining this TEI should be the primary faculty/course director/instructor of record for the course they wish to redesign. If you are unsure of your eligibility, please reach out to the TLC prior to enrolling.

Certificate

Participants who satisfactorily complete the set of requirements listed below are eligible for a UTHSC Teaching Excellence Institute certificate and a $500 stipend.

Participants must:

1. Write one assessment built on active learning principles and aligned with goals/objectives
2. Design one teaching activity built on active learning principles and aligned with goals/objectives
3. Compile a Portfolio/Overview/Matrix of a Course Redesign  
4. Develop an Active Learning Statement/Video for a syllabus or course website
5. Revise a syllabus to incorporate active learning strategies
6. Attend 6 of 7 synchronous sessions  
7. Participate in pre- and post-session asynchronous assignments 

Sessions
