The Student Service Leadership Project aims to support leadership development for medical students through mentoring, observation, and service learning. American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
Jeanne Spurlock Research Fellowship in Substance Abuse and Addiction for Minority Medical Students allows participants to explore a research career in substance abuse in relation to child and adolescent psychiatry. Provides up to $3,500 for 12 weeks of summer research under a child and adolescent psychiatrist researcher/mentor. Deadline February 15.

American Medical Women’s Association
The AMWA’s American Women's Hospitals Service (AWHS) provides small grants, up to $1,500, for assistance with transportation costs connected with pursuing medical studies in an off-campus setting where the medically neglected will benefit. The Grants are awarded to national AMWA members completing their residency or second, third or fourth year of medical school who will be spending a minimum of six weeks and no longer than one year in a sponsored program which will serve the needs of the medically underserved. Deadline is January 5.
American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene
The Benjamin H. Kean Travelling Fellowship in Tropical Medicine is administered by the Society’s American Committee on Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers’ Health and provides travel expenses for medical students who arrange clinical tropical medicine or tropical medicine research electives in areas afflicted by tropical diseases. Fellowship covers cost of airfare and up to $1000 for living expenses for an approved project related to tropical medicine. Deadline is March 2.
Appalachian Preceptorship
East Tennessee State University - Appalachian Preceptorship
The Appalachian Preceptorship—offered through the ETSU Quillen College of Medicine—exposes medical students interested in family medicine to rural primary care practice. Participating students spend three weeks with a clinical preceptor in a rural Southern Appalachian community and one week on the ETSU campus in interactive educational sessions. Open to first, second, and third-year medical students from across the country. Deadline is March 15.

The foundation provides grants up to $5,000 for projects that encourage compassionate and relationship-centered healthcare. Proposals should include a one-page letter of intent describing the objectives of the project and a clear description of the project, methods, participants and proposed funding and timeframe. Arnold P. Gold Foundation Student Summer Fellowship
The Student Summer Research Fellowship grants are modeled on NIH short-term training grants, but are awarded for research into community health and cultural competency issues, rather than laboratory work. Stipends of $3,000 are awarded for 10-week period to medical students in good academic standing at an accredited U.S. or Canadian school. Deadline is March 1.

Boren Fellowships allow U.S. graduate students to integrate research, language study, and academic internships into their education. Awards are made for a minimum of 12 weeks and a maximum of 24 months. Preference is given for countries, languages, and fields of study (including health and biomedical sciences) that are critical to U.S. national security (see website for details). Fellowship allows third and fourth-year medical and veterinary students to participate in a four to twelve-week public health project in a developing country. Fellows receive a $4,000 stipend to help pay for travel and living expenses at the project site. Applicants must be in their second or third year at the time of application. Deadline is January 16.

The CDC Experience Applied Epidemiology Fellowship
The CDC Experience Applied Epidemiology Fellowship is a 10 to 12 month fellowship that provides training through hands-on experiences in applied epidemiology and public health. Medical students in their 2nd or 3rd year may apply and start the fellowship while in their 3rd or 4th year. Students spend up to one year at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, getting practical experience. Under the mentorship of experienced CDC epidemiologists they work on solving real-world public health problems. Deadline is December 2.
Center for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia – HIVCorps Fellowship
The fellowship provides the opportunity to gain important field experience in areas such as program implementation and management, clinical trials, community outreach and support, clinical care quality improvement systems, data management and outcomes analysis, laboratory systems in the developing world, rural primary health care and health information systems. Medical, nursing, or MPH students are eligible to apply. Deadline is March 11.
Child Health Foundation
Child Health Foundation wishes to receive proposals from interested health workers, investigators, or community organizations for innovative research or innovative service projects directed at improving the health of infants, children, and pregnant women. Grants up to $5,000 are available. Proposals may be submitted by individuals with organizational support or groups. Deadline for letters of intent is April 30. Deadline for proposals is August 30.

Museum of Jewish Heritage - FASPE
The FASPE fellowship is a fully funded program for students designed to address contemporary ethical issues through a unique historical context. Sponsored by the Museum of Jewish Heritage, the two-week summer fellowship initially focuses on the role of the medical profession in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust and uses this as a framework for contemporary ethical issues. Following an introduction in New York, the fellows travel to Berlin, Krakow and Oswiecim (Auschwitz) where students will work with the faculty to explore both the history and the ethical issues facing their profession today. All program costs, including international and European travel, lodging, and food, are covered. Deadline is January 6.

The NIH funds this fellowship for medical students to do research in global health in certain countries within Africa, Asia, or Latin America. All awards are for nine months of work at the overseas site. Deadline for applications is October 17.
GE/NMF Medical Scholars Program
Fourth-year US minority medical students complete a two month mentored elective (departing the U.S. after Match and returning prior to graduation) in either Ghana or Uganda. The clinical elective will be focused on critical regional health care needs including HIV/AIDS, diabetes, tuberculosis, heart disease, cancer, and infant mortality. Fellows rotate in teams and work in district hospitals to improve patient care for medically underserved communities. Transportation, living expenses and a scholarship of $5,000 per student are provided. Deadline is September 30.
Global Health Service Corps
The Global Health Service Corps is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to ally health professionals as medical and nursing educators in resource-poor settings while providing needed expert technical support to these clinician educators during their periods of service. Volunteers also provide direct medical care, strengthening the mission of education and mentorship. Our greater goal is to help provide a sustainable solution addressing the vast shortages of health professionals in many parts of the world.

The medical scholars program provides scholarships in the amount of $2,000 to medical students to promote the subspecialty of infectious diseases. Projects must focus on pediatric or adult infectious diseases and may involve either clinical or research activities. Deadline is March 1.
International Research & Exchange Board
Short-term travel grants are available for students who hold a graduate-level degree (PhD, MA, MD, MBA, MFA, MPA, MPH, MLIS, MS, JD) to conduct research for up to eight weeks in Eastern Europe and Eurasia on issues relevant to U.S. foreign policy. Visa assistance, round-trip transportation, a monthly allowance for expenses, and emergency insurance are provided. Deadline is February 1.

Minority Health International Research Training (MHIRT) Program at Christian Brothers University
Christian Brothers University - MHIRT
Research training is offered through Christian Brothers University for health professions students who have an interest in biomedical science, behavioral science, environmental science, carnivore conservation, and/or public health. Preference is given to ethnic minorities and individuals from disparate backgrounds (socioeconomic, health, and first generation to receive higher education), although non-minorities with a commitment to serving disparate populations will also be considered. Participating students spend 10 weeks in one of three possible locations: Brazil, Uganda, and Thailand. All expenses are paid and a monthly stipend is provided. Deadline is December 16.
Pan American Health Organization Training Program in International Health
Training Program In International Health
This program provides training in international health to eight or ten health professionals at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO, Washington DC) in their chosen area of concentration and develop a work/study plan with a mentor and the unit chief. During the period of study beginning in late-January and ending in mid-December, participants are given a round-trip ticket to Washington, D.C., as well as a stipend for basic living expenses and moving costs. Applicants must hold an MPH or an equivalent graduate degree and a minimum of two years experience directing programs in education or public health research. Deadline is July 31.
