Applicant Information

Welcome to Chattanooga!

Choosing a residency is one of the most important decisions of your career. We are excited to have the opportunity to introduce you to our program and city! We believe that finding the residency that fits your needs and personality is paramount to becoming the best physician you can be, as well as for maintaining personal wellness during training.

Many qualities of our program can be demonstrated virtually, but most are best experienced in-person. Visiting us in person gives you the ideal opportunity to decide if Chattanooga is the place that feels right for you – by spending time with our residents, seeing our busy emergency department, and exploring the natural beauty of the area.

In-person interviews (including a dinner with residents the night before) are scheduled for:

  • November 13, 2024 (Wednesday)
  • November 15, 2024 (Friday)
  • November 20, 2024 (Wednesday)
  • December 4, 2024 (Wednesday)
  • December 6, 2024 (Friday)

While we do encourage in-person interviews, we understand there may be circumstances during interview season that are not conducive to travel. For those who are unable to come to Chattanooga, we will offer two virtual sessions on January 7, 2025 (Tuesday) and January 15, 2025 (Wednesday). These sessions also include an online social event the night before.

Upon review of all completed applications, our selection committee will extend interview invitations to the best qualified candidates. Interview slots will be filled on a first-come basis.

Program Information

We participate in and adhere to the guidelines of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP program #: 1689110C0). Our residency offers seven positions at each PGY level.

All applications are handled through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS); paper applications are not accepted.

Completed ERAS applications will include:

  • Curriculum vitae;
  • Personal statement;
  • Offical medical school transcript;
  • USMLE Step 2 (or COMLEX Level 2) scores;
  • Dean's letter (MSPE packet); and
  • 3 letters of recommendation*
*We prefer that at least two of the letters are a CORD Standard Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) using the SLOE template.

ERAS Signaling

The University of Tennessee College of Medicine-Chattanooga Emergency Medicine Residency is participating in ERAS program signaling. Please follow AAMC guidance about signaling, even if you rotated with our program.

Recruitment Policies

Please refer to the Documents and Residency Info section at right to view our policies on recruitment, selection, and appointment; our current Initial Resident Letter of Agreement; and the terms and conditions of appointment.

Note: The Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners requires that applicants for licensure in Tennessee must be graduates from either LCME- or AOA-accredited schools or from international schools whose admissions meet or exceed those of medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

The UTHSC College of Medicine-Chattanooga and its programs will only consider applicants for residency or fellowship who are from schools that meet these same criteria so they would be eligible for medical licensing in Tennessee after completing residency.

The Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners adopts the following list of accreditation bodies:

In addition, the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA) provides a list of countries whose designated accreditation process (or designated organization used for their accreditation) has comparable standards used to evaluate U.S. medical schools. Medical schools in those countries will be deemed to meet the criteria required in Tennessee.
