Gastroenterology Fellows

William Oelsner, MD

William Oelsner, MD

Chief Fellow - PGY-6

Residency: UTHSC College of Medicine, Chattanooga

About Will:

I am a father, husband, physician, and researcher. I am originally from New York, but grew up in South Carolina. I graduated from Wake Forest University with honors and a BS in Biology and Entrepreneurship. I worked for 2 years as a medical assistant and office manager at a family medicine office before going to medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina. During medical training, I completed an NIH T32 Research Fellowship at Vanderbilt University in Translational Wound Healing under the mentorship of Jon Schoenecker. I completed a year of General Surgery training at UTHSC Chattanooga before switching to Internal Medicine.

My research as a GI fellow is focused on using national databases to critically examine health care disparities related to early onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC). In 2023, my research on EOCRC was selected for Outstanding Research Award in Colon and a Presidential Oral Presentation at ACG 2023 in Vancouver.

Outside of work, I am a father to three rambunctious children and husband to an incredibly talented pediatrician. Kathryn and I met during college at Wake Forest University, and we completed medical school and residency together. We enjoy spending time outdoors and have backpacked Isle of Skye in Scotland on our honeymoon, dog sledded in Colorado, hiked 106 miles around the Ring of Kerry in Ireland, fished in the Gulf Coast, and scuba-dived in Vietnam. Now with kids, I am a back-yard farmer, reading teacher, zoo explorer, fort-builder, jungle-gym supervisor, and swim instructor. In my spare time, I enjoy indoor rowing and audiobooks.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and pets, watching UGA football, hiking, camping, fishing, reading, and watching indie movies. I am a self-proclaimed foodie and love trying new cuisines. I also enjoy traveling when time permits.
