Pediatric Dentistry
The College of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, offers a postdoctoral program in pediatric dentistry designed to meet the needs of practitioners who wish to specialize in the practice of dentistry for children.
Program Length and Number of Positions
A 24-month certificate program and optional 30-month Master’s Dental Science Degree program commencing on or about July 1 of each year. Four new positions are available each year. Successful completion of the program renders the student educationally qualified for specialty examination by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Program Strengths

- In depth training in general anesthesia, premedication and sedation through the Departments of Anesthesiology and Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
- Clinical experience with medically compromised, developmentally disabled, and cleft lip and palate patients.
Program Stipend and Tuition
The stipend is $43,600 for first year residents and $45,400 for second year residents. No tuition is required for residents; however, fees associated with the College of Graduate Health Sciences are required (approximately $800 a year). Fringe benefits include malpractice coverage, health insurance for the resident, one week of vacation a year, University Holidays and 3½ Personal Days. Health insurance for dependents is available for an additional premium.
Program’s Distinguished Honors
Graduates of UT Pediatric Dentistry have a rich history of leadership in academics and organized dentistry. Its alumni have served as Presidents of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Trustees of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association, and Presidents of the Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana Dental Associations. The alumni have a strong base and host an annual continuing education meeting in Memphis. Multiple faculty serve as examiners for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, site visitors for the Commission on Dental Accreditation, and have served on various committees of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Faculty and residents have published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, Pediatric Dentistry, the International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry, and Dental Traumatology. The department has received multiple research and service grants and a federal dental faculty loan repayment grant. Graduates of the residency practice not only in the Southeastern region but throughout the nation and world from Washington State to Florida to California to Singapore.
