General Stores
General Stores was established as a ready source of laboratory supplies for teaching and research. In accordance with UTHSC policy, General Stores is a self-supporting, non-profit facility.
We are your on-campus source for research and teaching supplies including:
- Lab consumables
- Chemicals, media, reagents, and supplements
- Tax-free alcohol
- Purchasing services
- Dry ice
- Shipping services (UPS/FedEx)
- Online ordering
- Delivery to your lab or office
- Closeout specials
We source / purchase from over 130 vendors and receive shipping discounts or stock room pricing from several, including:
- Thermo Fisher Scientific (Supply Center)
- Bio-Rad (Life Sciences)
- Qiagen (QIAstock)
Visit us in General Education Building Room B41, 7:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. You can also browse our stock list to see what’s normally available and place your request via AdvanTech AVA, our online inventory management system.

General Stores Ordering Procedure
To purchase from General Stores, you may:
- Submit a Shopping Cart requisition via AVA, our online inventory management system
- Send a request by e-mail to gstores@uthsc.edu
- Visit us in person
- Call us at 8-6152
Using AVA:
- Click the link above to access AVA
- Enter your NetID and password on the UTHSC Central Authentication Service page, or click the blue UTHSC Login button from AVA landing page
- Under Supply Management, select Shopping Cart
- In the Shopping Cart:
- Enter your name
- Enter your room or office number and press enter, then select your address from the dropdown list
- From the next dropdown list, choose the account number to charge. If you do not see the account number you wish to charge, please contact us so that we can add it to your profile
- Click the ‘Pick Up’ box if you would like to collect your items from us, otherwise leave it blank and we will deliver your items as soon as we can
- Enter any additional information in the comments box, such as a delivery time or if the order is for the attention of another person
- Search for supplies using a keyword or a catalog number. A keyword will generate a list of possible items that you can choose, along with the quantity we have available. If there are 0 available, the item may be backordered or non-stock. You can still request the item and we will either order it directly from the vendor or notify you if it is currently unavailable
- Click ‘Submit Cart’ to send us your requisition for processing.
Shortages, Damaged or Defective Items
Please check your delivered items as soon as possible after receipt and report to General Stores any shortages, damaged, or defective items within two working days. We will collect any damaged or defective items and rectify the situation as promptly as possible. We will also work diligently to correct any shortages. General Stores delivery staff will not return any item to General Stores without the proper return authorization. You must contact General Stores prior to returning any items. Non-stock items are subject to a vendor restocking fee and freight charges to return the item. Perishable items are typically non-returnable and may only be eligible for a refund in the case of damage or defects.
