Edward H. Storer, MD Student Surgical Research Award
Edward H. Storer, MD Student Surgical Research Award, provides up to $1000 in support for scientific or professional meeting and conference expenses. Funds are to be used towards meeting registration, airfare and 1-2 nights hotel stay.
Eligibility and Requirements:
- Must be the first & presenting author on the abstract/presentation;
- Must have a faculty member with a primary appointment in the UTHSC Department of Surgery;
- Must be a national meeting in the continental United States (no local, regional, or international meetings are eligible);
- Must be accepted for oral presentation (plenary or full oral; poster presentations are not eligible);
- Must acknowledge support from the Edward H. Storer, MD, Student Surgical Research Award;
- Must not be awarded to a student more than once in their medical career;
- Preference will be given to students with a career interest in Surgery.
Application Details
The application process will occur in 2 phases:
Phase I
- To ensure subsequent eligibility, the UTHSC Department of Surgery faculty member must
provide preliminary notification to Drs. Shibata and Gosain by email at the time of
abstract submission. Information required for Phase 1 includes:
- Name of medical student, year of graduation
- Name of primary faculty mentor and Division affiliation
- Name, date and location of national society/meeting to which abstract is submitted
- Abstract title
- Full author list
Phase 2
- Upon notification of acceptance for oral presentation as described above, a formal application must be submitted which includes the following information:
- Name of medical student, year of graduation
- Name of primary faculty mentor and Division affiliation
- Name, date and location of national society/meeting to which the abstract has been accepted
- Abstract title
- Full author list
- Full text of the full abstract
- Include details of IRB/IACUC approval if not specifically mentioned in the abstract
- Brief (1 paragraph) statement from the student regarding their interest in a career in surgery
- Proposed budget
- Copy of email notification of abstract acceptance.
- The application should be submitted as a single PDF document
- Any questions about the grant (eligibility, formatting, etc.) should be directed to Dr. Gosain.
Timeline
- Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout the academic year.
- Applications should be submitted within 1 week of notification of abstract acceptance.
- Grant recipients and mentors will be notified by email.
- Grant recipients for the past academic year will be announced during the awards ceremony at the Department of Surgery Harwell Wilson Surgical Society meeting.
- Grant recipients will be expected to submit their abstract for presentation at the Department of Surgery Harwell Wilson Surgical Society meeting.
