Medical Student Research Funding

Student Research and Meeting Travel Support

The Offices of Student Affairs/Medical Education provide up to $750 in support for scientific or professional meeting and conference expenses.

Eligibility and requirements:

  1. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. For those in the Pass/Fail curriculum, academic standing must be in the 1st to 3rd quartiles; those in the 4th quartile would need approval from the Deans office;
  2. Must be presenting author on a poster or podium presentation;
  3. Must list COM student affiliation on the meeting abstract and presentation;
  4. Must verify that travel funding/meeting support is not available from the faculty mentor's department.

To apply contact Dr. Matthew Ennis (mennis@uthsc.edu). Note that allocation and use of travel funds must be approved using official UT forms in advance of the meeting. Support is provided to one meeting per student.

Edward H. Storer, MD Student Surgical Research Award, provides up to $1000 in support for scientific or professional meeting and conference expenses. Funds are to be used towards meeting registration, airfare and 1-2 nights hotel stay.

Eligibility and Requirements:

  1. Must be the first and presenting author on the abstract/presentation;
  2. Must have a faculty member with a primary appointment in the UTHSC Department of Surgery;
  3. Must be a national meeting in the continental United States (no local, regional, or international meetings are eligible);
  4. Must be accepted for oral presentation (plenary or full oral; poster presentations are not eligible);
  5. Must acknowledge support from the Edward H. Storer, MD, Student Surgical Research Award;
  6. Must not be awarded to a student more than once in their medical career;
  7. Preference will be given to students with a career interest in Surgery.
