About the Department of Surgery

 

Welcome to the UTHSC Department of Surgery. 

Established in 1911, the UTHSC Department of Surgery has a storied past and we strive to maintain a tradition of excellence yet at the same time, continue to evolve as a cutting edge academic department.

With approximately 70 full-time faculty members across 9 divisions, the Department provides high-quality, innovative surgical care across numerous specialties to the Mid-South region and beyond. UTHSC surgical faculty members have a broad presence in the  Memphis area with practices based at all Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare system hospitals (including University, Germantown, North, South, Olive Branch and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospitals), Regional One Medical Center, Baptist Memorial Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center. The Department is committed to clinical excellence with the overarching goal of continuously elevating the quality of care for the entire region.

The surgical education of medical students, resident and fellows remains among the highest of priorities for the Department of Surgery, which serves as the home to a dynamic General Surgery residency and multiple subspecialty fellowships including Trauma/Surgical Critical Care, Surgical Oncology, Vascular Surgery and Pediatric Surgery. With continuous enhancement of our educational curriculum to include didactic, hands-on and simulation-based teaching, we are dedicated to developing the next generation of surgical leaders.

In addition to the provision of competent and compassionate clinical patient care, faculty members are actively engaged in innovative basic, translational and clinical research with a growing portfolio of external, peer-reviewed funding. Department faculty are also involved in numerous transdisciplinary collaborations with basic and population scientists. These initiatives also provide an outstanding avenue for the mentorship of medical students and residents, which is highly encouraged.

The resources of the College of Medicine and our multiple hospital partners create an outstanding and diverse environment that allows us to maintain our commitment to all aspects of academic surgery.
