Pediatric Surgery

The Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is dedicated to improving the health and welfare of all infants, children and adolescents through evidence-based clinical care, groundbreaking research and education.

Our team of clinicians includes nationally recognized surgeons, highly trained nurse practitioners and outstanding residents in training.  From addressing complex fetal anomalies with our colleagues in the Le Bonheur Fetal Center to managing rare vascular anomalies in the Vascular Anomaly Center to addressing childhood obesity through our Healthy Lifestyle Clinic, our team of clinicians is committed to outstanding patient and family-centered care.

Message from the Interim Division Chief

James W. Eubanks III
Tim Jancelewicz, MD

Our Level I Pediatric Trauma Program at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital was verified by the American College of Surgeons in 2011. It was the first ACS verified Level I Trauma Center in the state of Tennessee.  That program is under the direction of Regan Williams, MD.

While the pediatric surgical team sees most of our patients at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, we also see patients at the following locations: Le Bonheur Outpatient Center-EastLe Bonheur Outpatient Center-Jackson, TNLe Bonheur Outpatient Center-Tupelo, MSLe Bonheur East Surgery Center and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Our faculty are pursuing new ways to cure childhood illnesses and improve pediatric surgical care through innovative clinical and basic science research. Through our partnership with the Children’s Foundation Research Institute, our team has the foundational tools necessary to successfully investigate new surgical approaches to childhood diseases and improve the outcomes of children in the future.

Our ACGME accredited Pediatric Surgery Fellowship program was established in 1991. Under the direction of Ying Weatherall, MD, our fellows train at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital where they learn the newest techniques in surgical care. We graduate one pediatric surgery fellow per year.

We also train one fellow per year in Pediatric Surgical Critical Care under the direction of Alexander Feliz, MD. This program, which was accredited in 2018 by the ACGME, is one of the few programs in the country focused on teaching surgeons how to take care of the most critically ill and injured children.

Additionally, we train UTHSC medical students and general surgery residents. We also provide pediatric surgery training for general surgery residents at the University of Tennessee-Nashville.
