Affiliated Training Facilities

All fellows are assigned to a continuity care clinic at the VA. Each first and second year fellow has a continuity clinic for one half day each week at the VA. Patients are longitudinal, managed care, post-hospital follow-ups, consultations, or walk-in primary care patients. First-hand knowledge is gained about managed health care. Each fellow has an extraordinary amount of patient contact.

Founded in 1922, the Memphis VA Medical Center (VAMC) is affiliated with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and is one of our primary adult teaching hospitals. It offers quality healthcare for the changing medical, surgical, and quality of life needs of the Mid-South men and women who so proudly served our nation.

For the 196,000 veterans from 53 counties in western Tennessee, northern Mississippi, and northwest Arkansas, the VAMC offers a variety of services for both physical and mental health needs. New programs include those for traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicide prevention.

Consultation services are offered. This is also one of the sites for continuity clinics throughout the full three years of fellowship. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in state of the art multidisciplinary clinics and conferences offered at the VA. Fellows experience a vast variety of complex oncological and hematological cases during their consult months as well as in the clinic.

Consult Hematology/Oncology Service: Staffed by attending, fellow, and on occasion internal medicine residents. Full time oncology pharmacist also available. (PGY4-2 months; PGY5- 1 month)

Regional One Health (ROH) was established in 1829, making it the oldest health system in Tennessee. ROH is the only level-1 trauma center in the region, has the region's only accredited burn center, and also serves as the public safety-net hospital for the Memphis area.  Unique services offered by Regional One include the trauma services and the burn ICU, in addition to caring for the region's underserved population.

ROH is the largest medical and surgical teaching site for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.  The partnership between Regional One Health and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center includes the UT Regional One Physicians group, the largest teaching physician group of its kind in the Mid-South. 

Consultation services are offered and an inpatient admission service for chemotherapy treatment. This is also one of the sites for continuity clinics during fellowship. Fellows experience a vast variety of complex oncological and hematological cases during their consult and admission months at ROH.

Baptist Memorial Hospital (BMH) - Memphis is the flagship hospital of the Baptist Memorial Health Care system and a tertiary care referral center. The 80-acre campus includes the hospital, Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women, Baptist Women’s Health Center, Spence and Becky Wilson Baptist Children’s Hospital, and Baptist Memorial Restorative Care Hospital, Baptist Heart Institute, and five (5) physicians’ office buildings. The Baptist mission is a three-fold ministry of healing, preaching, and teaching which is used to provide quality health care.

BMH is one of Tennessee's busiest hospitals with 65,000 emergency department visits and 12,000 surgeries each year. The hospital physicians are Mid-South transplant pioneers, performing the first area open heart surgery in 1960 and the first local heart transplant in 1985. A variety of subspecialty and ambulatory electives are available taught by volunteer faculty, many of whom have received teaching awards.

Baptist hospital provides: Bone Marrow Transplant Team: Staffed by attending, fellow, and pharmacist. The fellow will gain fundamental knowledge of inpatient care of bone marrow transplant patients. Again, a multidisciplinary team approach is utilized, meeting twice monthly to discuss challenging cases.

Baptist also allows access to attendings for preceptor months in breast, GI, lung, etc. for specialized areas of disease.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, founded by actor Danny Thomas along with Lemuel Diggs and Anthony Abraham in 1962, started as a promise to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of the hopeless. In return for guidance in his career, Thomas pledged to build a facility to treat ill children regardless of their race, color, creed, or their family's ability to pay. St. Jude has become a premier pediatric treatment and research facility, focusing on children with aggressive cancers. The hospital treats children from all over the United States as well as 70 other countries throughout the world. St. Jude research has helped increase the childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to 80%.

In 2019, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was ranked the number two pediatric cancer hospital by U.S. News & World Report. St. Jude and the World Health Organization recently announced a five-year collaboration to cure at least 60% of children worldwide with the six most common types of cancer by 2030.

Fellows are provided the opportunity to attend clinic for St. Jude Life, which is an adult clinic for the evaluation of late effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Fellows also have the opportunity for electives as well as clinical and basic science research at this state of the art institution.
