Ongoing Projects
Project Goal:
Implementation of transition to adult program for sickle cell disease in low and middle
income countries. Working with two clinics in Brazil – one in Sao Paulo and one in
Rio de Janeiro
Aim 1:
Identify evidence-based practices (EBP) for health care transition in SCD at St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN
Aim 1 Progress:
Conducted retrospective review of 580 patients who transitioned to adult care through
St. Jude. Determined the elements of transition that predicted successful transition.
Abstract accepted to ASH 2022. Manuscript currently pending.
Aim 2:
Determine facilitators and barriers to implementation of health care transition in
Brazil.
Aim 2 Progress:
Conducted 9 surveys and 42 interviews with various stakeholders in Brazil (providers,
nurses, patients, families, etc). Preliminary results have been collected, analysis
ongoing.
Aim 3:
Create transition toolkit to launch in Brazilian clinic
Aim 3 Progress:
Held 2 day meeting in Memphis with all of Brazilian team. Reviewed facilitators and
barriers and began working on transition protocol.
