*In addition to the base salary, those residents participating in the disability and group life insurance programs provided through GME currently receive an additional $660 per year for disability and life insurance benefits as shown above in Column 3. Residents not participating do not receive this stipend.

Fringe benefits include:

Library Resources
Residents and fellows have access to the UT Health Science Center Library. This includes catalog and database searches, e-books, e-journal finder, and study carrels. Please contact the library to get an access code for use with all on-line services of the library.
Insurance
Residents and fellows may obtain healthcare (health, dental, and vision), life, and
disability insurance. A detailed overview of insurance is available on the GME Insurance page.
University Health also offers a number of services to support employees, including housestaff.

Leave
Residents and fellows may take up to:
- three (3) weeks of annual leave per a twelve-month period
- three (3) weeks of sick leave per a twelve-month period
- up to 10 days per twelve-month period for educational leave (granted with the approval of the Program Director)
- up to 12 weeks FMLA and/or four months leave (paid or unpaid) for the birth or adoption of a child
- three (3) days of paid leave for the death of an immediate family member

Uniforms
- Four white coats provided by the program to PGY-1s, embroidered with the resident’s name. Three white coats provided each subsequent year.
- Four sets of scrubs provided by the Pediatrics Program, with replacements yearly as needed.
- Two sets of scrubs provided by the Internal Medicine Program.
Pagers
We do not use physical personal pagers. You will be assigned a number through Ring Central application which will serve as your personal pager.
Meals
Money for meals is provided through a debit system on residents’ ID badge at all participating hospitals other than the VA. Many of the didactic conferences have lunch provided.
Parking
Controlled access parking garages and lots are available to all residents at no cost.
Education Stipend
An Education/Book Stipend is provided for Medicine/Pediatric residents for the purchase of textbooks, board study materials, journal subscriptions, or any other educational software.
Resident Parents
Professional Memberships
A free membership in the American Academy of Pediatrics entitles residents to a copy of the most recent Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases (the Redbook), subscriptions to Pediatrics, Pediatrics In Review and The AAP News and membership in the Resident Section of the AAP, and access to Pedialink question bank.
The program pays for every resident’s membership to the American College of Physicians (ACP). ACP provides programs, products, and services that are of special interest to residents, including Associate Abstract Competitions, and a subscription to Annals of Internal Medicine, MKSAP, and Board Basics..
Professional Meeting
Residents may attend one major national meeting for up to 5 days. Expenses are reimbursed, up to $1,000.
Miscellaneous Benefits
- Free literature computer searches through the Le Bonheur, St. Jude and University of Tennessee Health Science Center libraries.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course and Certification, as part of the orientation program. The Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) Course is provided during the NICU rotation.
- Hepatitis B, rubella, PPD and VZV screening. Hep A, varicella, Hep B, influenza and measles vaccines if needed, at no cost.
- Discounts on computer hardware and software.
- Two resident lounges with television, refrigerator, microwave oven, hospital and university computers with modem access to literature searches are provided.
- A Tennessee medical license is not required for residency-related activities. An institutional permit covers residents.
- Access to MKSAP and Pedialink.
