Treatment
We Offer the Right Treatment for Your Needs.
The UT Addiction Medicine Outpatient Clinic, in the Department of Family Medicine, offers outpatient care opioid, alcohol and other substance use disorders. Our health providers understand addiction and treat patients suffering from the disease of addiction with respect and compassion. In addition to physician provided services, our clinic offers counseling and case management services. We also offer referral options to community resources to help patients and their families struggling with the consequences of addiction. Our treatment options celebrate abstinence, respect Twelve Step philosophies, and incorporate medication-assisted treatment modalities, including the use of buprenorphine (e.g. Suboxone, Sublocade) and naltrexone (e.g. Vivitrol).
Treatment areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Alcohol use disorders
- Opioid use disorders
- Benzodiazepine and other sedative use disorders
- Cocaine use disorders
- Amphetamine and other stimulant use disorders
- Cannabis use disorders
- Evaluation and treatment of impaired professionals.
- Psychiatric co-morbidity (in the Department of Psychiatry)
Treatment
Treatment looks very different for each patient, depending on what his or her needs are. Each patient is assessed on initial visit to determine an individualized plan of care.
Treatment could involve:
- Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT)
(ie Suboxone, Buprenorphine / Naloxone) - Behavioral Therapy
- Enhancement Therapy
- 12-Step Program Facilitation
Treatment is offered in an outpatient setting that allows patients to continue working and living at home. Treatment can also be offered while a patient is hospitalized in another inpatient addiction program.
The doctors of UT Addiction Medicine University Clinical Health are also participating in the University of Tennessee College of Medicine’s training of medical students on alternatives to opioid pain medications. Part of the teaching will also spill over into community outreach and the re-education of practicing physicians on pain management alternatives.
As part of their offerings, the practice is able to treat pregnant women with addiction issues. In the summer of 2016, a program was started to examine neonatal abstinence syndrome (or newborn withdrawal syndrome), helping create a Center for Excellence for Addiction and Maternity best practices. Working side by side with maternal fetal medicine specialists who are high-risk obstetricians, addiction can be safely addressed for both the mother and the child.
