College of Pharmacy Reassessment Policy

The University of Tennessee (UT) Health Science Center College of Pharmacy (COP) utilizes policies and procedures to guide our organization.

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to define a reassessment process that allows students to demonstrate achievement of the course learning outcomes in the PharmD curriculum.

Scope

This policy applies to didactic courses, with limited exceptions, in the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum beginning with the graduating class of 2030.

Definition

Reassessment is a structured opportunity for eligible students with a final grade of D, F, or No Pass in a didactic course, excluding experiential courses (IPPEs, APPEs), milestone courses, or the capstone course, to demonstrate achievement of the course learning outcomes after the course has finished.

Reassessment Policy

Reassessment is a structured opportunity for eligible students assigned a final grade of D, F, or No Pass in a didactic course to demonstrate achievement of course learning outcomes after the course has finished. For reassessment purposes, the final course grade will be calculated but not recorded in Banner (student will be given an ‘incomplete’).

All eligibility criteria must be met for a student to be eligible for reassessment. If the eligibility criteria are not met, the original final course grade will remain and be recorded in Banner.

A maximum of one course reassessment is allowed per semester, and a maximum of two course reassessments total are permitted in the entire didactic curriculum. A student who is determined eligible for more than one course reassessment in a single semester must choose which one course to attempt reassessment in. Reassessment will be offered in all didactic courses beginning with the graduating class of 2030, except for experiential courses (IPPEs, APPEs), milestone courses, or the capstone course.

In reassessment, a student must demonstrate achievement of the course learning outcomes through an assessment. Example reassessment options include, but are not limited to: a cumulative written exam, an oral exam, a project, or an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). The reassessment format must be appropriate for the course type. Any reassessment must be distinct from original course assessment(s) and reflect the relative emphasis of core content areas within the course.

The reassessment format and grading of student performance will be determined and developed by the course director in collaboration with the Office of Academic Affairs to promote consistency across courses and with the course learning outcomes.

Successful completion of the reassessment requires that the student meet or exceed the pre-determined threshold. Successful reassessment will result in a replacement grade no higher than a C in a SPECs-graded course, or a Pass grade in a Pass/No Pass course. If reassessment is unsuccessful, the original course grade will remain and be recorded in Banner.

This policy applies regardless of any in-course remediation opportunity offered by the Course Director.

Eligibility Criteria

In order for a student to be eligible for reassessment, the student must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Earned a course grade of D or F (in a SPECs-graded course) or a No Pass (in a Pass/No Pass course);
  • Completed reassessment application form;
  • Compliant with requested Early Intervention procedures;
  • Used tokens during the course, if appropriate;
  • Did not have excessive unexcused absences or engagement or professionalism issues;
  • Currently in good academic standing (not on academic probation); and
  • No honor code violation or pending allegation.

Additionally, any reassessment attempt must be preceded by mandatory self-study and tutoring/review, with documented completion/participation.

Administration and Timeline

Student eligibility for reassessment is jointly determined and coordinated by the Course Director and the Office of Academic Affairs. All requirements, including taking the reassessment, must be completed by the student within five (5) weeks from the last day of the class for the semester in which the course was completed.
