CITI Training
The UT Health Science Center uses the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) program for clinical researcher training.
CITI is a widely utilized web-based training platform that provides a variety of training courses for different aspects of clinical and non-clinical research. Human subject protections and good clinical practice courses are mandatory for clinical researchers; however, there may be additional courses required based on other research activity, e.g., responsible conduct of research, animal welfare, conflicts of interest, bio-safety, etc. These courses may be assigned through an institutional office, department or program.
What is Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)?
Who has to complete CITI training?
Online training courses MUST be completed by:
- anyone acting as an employee or agent of the UT Health Science Center — including faculty, staff, students, residents, or fellows — engaged in the conduct of human subject research (working directly with human subjects or with identifiable data or biological specimens)
- employees or agents conducting human subjects research at the UT Health Science Center partner institutions such as Campbell Clinic, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Methodist Healthcare – Memphis Hospitals, and Regional One Health
- research faculty advisors
- department chairs who approve/acknowledge research
- research administrators
- IRB board members and staff
The UT Health Science Center IRB approval of any new application, continuing review, or revision application is contingent upon training completion.
Which courses do I have to take?
Investigators, all key study personnel (including faculty advisors), and department chairs have two options:
1) Basic Human Subject Protections + Good Clinical Practice (Basic HSP + GCP) combination course (22 modules). For recertification in three years, you will be required to take the entire course again. Research administrators, IRB chairs, IRB members, and IRB staff must take this combination course.
OR
2) Human Subjects Training Basic Biomedical (Biomed) course (18 modules) plus GCP for Clinical Trials with Investigational Drugs and Medical Devices (U.S. FDA Focus) course (14 modules).
