Medicine Application and Admissions Process

Information and Updates for the 2025 Admissions Cycle

We will continue to screen applications to assess core areas: academics, clinical shadowing experience, community service, research, oral communication, and other extracurricular activities. As endorsed by the AAMC Group on Student Affairs, these core areas and applicant attributes are modeled on the 15 Core Competencies for entering medical students.

Pass/Fail Grades

We will accept pass/fail grades for courses taken during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are aware that some undergraduate institutions may have allowed students to take courses either for grades or on a pass/fail basis. Grades of “pass” will satisfy the UTHSC College of Medicine admissions requirements.

Online/Distance Learning Courses

We will continue to accept online and/or virtual coursework (including labs) for courses taken during the pandemic.

Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT)

All MCAT scores for the 2025 application cycle from all possible test dates through September 2024 will be accepted.

Dates and Deadlines

Beginning late June, we will begin receiving primary applications from AMCAS for the 2025 admissions cycle. Applications must be received by AMCAS no later than November 15, 2024, by 11:59 pm EST.

Early Decision

The UTHSC College of Medicine does not offer an early decision program.

Clinical Shadowing Experience/Service Hours

We understand the impact the COVID-19 pandemic may have had on an applicant’s ability to obtain shadowing experience. The Admissions Committee is eager to see how applicants have been able to think creatively to continue to serve others as they seek to demonstrate their understanding of the practice of medicine.

Interviews

The College of Medicine will continue to host interviews virtually throughout the entire 2025 admissions cycle. The goal is to maintain a fair and equitable interview process for all applicants. We are working to ensure quality experiences that showcase our campus and allow applicants the opportunity to engage with our faculty, staff, and students.

Step One - Admissions Prerequisites and Requirements

Are you eligible to apply? You must be a United States Citizen, or have Permanent Resident status, e.g., green card, to be eligible to apply to the College of Medicine.

Federal regulations require UTHSC to notify potential students regarding whether the completion of the program is sufficient to meet educational requirements for licensure in States.  For complete information please see the Student Right to Know page on the UTHSC website https://www.uthsc.edu/students/consumer-information.php under “Educational Requirements for Licensure or Certification by Program by State”.  You are also encouraged to consult your state licensing agency directly as requirements may change.

Step Two - Complete the AMCAS Application

Applications for admission begin with the common application submitted online at American Medical College Application Service . AMCAS Applications for Fall must be received by AMCAS no later than November 15. If you have questions about AMCAS, please do not contact the UTHSC College of Medicine Office of Admissions. Instead, contact the AAMC Section for Student Services at 202.828.0600.

Withdrawing your Application:

Applicants who wish to withdraw their application from consideration should e-mail the College of Medicine Office of Admissions. Once your request is received, you will be e-mailed confirmation.

Withdrawing your Offer of Admission:

Applicants who wish to withdraw their offer of admission should e-mail the College of Medicine Office of Admissions. Once your written request is received, you will be e-mailed confirmation.

Step Three - Complete the UTHSC College of Medicine secondary application

In addition to the AMCAS application, the process includes a secondary application specific to the UTHSC College of Medicine. Once we have received a verified application from AMCAS, a select group of applicants will be sent a link to complete the secondary application.

Applications for admission are not considered complete until the secondary application has been received. Important notes:

  • Any omissions will delay the processing of your application
  • The fee for the secondary application is $100.
  • Please refer to the instructions in the UTHSC College of Medicine online secondary application.

The UTHSC College of Medicine utilizes WebAdMIT as our applicant gateway tool for communication, scheduling, and information sharing. If you do not see the secondary application invitation in your Inbox, spam filters may be the cause. Your email service provider may have flagged the email as spam for your account or at a system level. To resolve, check your Spam or Junk Email folder. If found, move the email to your inbox and add the sender address to your list of approved senders. The address you need to add is ‘donotreply@webadmit.org’.

Step Four - Interview Process

Interviews are scheduled beginning in October through the end of March by invitation only. Notifications are e-mailed two to three weeks in advance. It is imperative that you check your e-mail regularly, including your junk/spam folder. The Admissions Committee will expect reapplicants to have improved their credentials significantly.

Step Five - Committee Decisions

After the Admissions Committee has reviewed your file, a decision is made to:

  • offer an acceptance
  • deny
  • receive an invitation as an alternate

After interviewing, some candidates may be placed on the alternate list which is ranked by the College of Medicine Committee on Admissions. We do not share individual rankings with candidates. Generally, offers of admission to candidates on the alternate list are not made prior to April 30. Candidates who are offered an acceptance from the alternate list will be required to notify our office within two weeks from the date an offered was made. Selected candidates will be offered admission on a rolling basis.
